At Speira, we support you with customised aluminium alloys that are designed for use in battery cell housings and covers. With our innovative solutions from the ION Cell series, you benefit from years of experience and market-leading expertise in aluminium as a primary material for cell housings and covers, making us your reliable partner.
Prismatic and cylindrical battery cell housings for battery systems in electric vehicles are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the dynamic automotive industry and in smart vehicle construction. Aluminium as a housing material for lithium-ion batteries shows its strengths in e-mobility and when it comes to reducing the overall weight, increasing the range and improving energy efficiency. In addition to protection against mechanical damage and environmental influences, aluminium also provides effective heat dissipation and therefore improves battery life.
Battery housings made of aluminium are not only used in e-mobility, however, but also in stationary applications such as the energy storage systems of solar or wind power plants. Here, they effectively protect the battery thanks to their strength properties and high corrosion resistance, even under the most difficult weather conditions.
As a material, aluminium therefore has precisely the right properties to meet the special requirements of efficient battery operation and modern mobility, which is why aluminium has become indispensable in the transport sector. As the substitution of combustion engines by electric vehicles alone will require 300 to 500 tonnes of aluminium for battery housings per GWh of battery capacity and vehicle power produced, sustainable and infinitely recyclable aluminium is a key component of the energy and mobility transition.

While the material ensures the greatest possible formability during the production of cell housings, the material impresses with its high surface quality, strength and excellent thermal conductivity after processing into a component.
The high thermal conductivity of aluminium can significantly improve the thermal management of batteries. Thanks to efficient heat dissipation via the aluminium housing, the batteries remain cool and safe even during fast charging. A more homogeneous temperature distribution within the battery cell housing also lays the foundation for a long service life.
Ultimately, a battery cell housing made of aluminium ranks at the highest level of sustainability. After all, the material is known for its infinite recyclability, which is fully in line with the concept of electromobility.
At Speira, we have been dedicated to the development of aluminium as a primary material for battery housings for many years and, in addition to the market standard 3003, we have also designed our own 3xxx variant for prismatic cell housings, which allows for a very high proportion of recycled aluminium. With our experience and expertise, we have become the market leader in this product segment and have been supplying the largest battery manufacturers in Europe with primary material for prismatic battery cell housings as a series supplier for several years.
We are also characterised by our in-depth understanding of the technical and qualitative requirements of your processes, which is primarily based on our long-standing supplier relationships. We rely on advanced surface inspection systems, among other things, for the quality control of our aluminium coils. We supply in flexible dimensions in terms of material thickness and width as well as coil diameter, including sample quantities on request. In addition to low-carbon aluminium, we also offer our customers customised recycling concepts with closed scrap and product cycles on request.
Speira develops aluminium for prismatic battery cell housings and covers, laying the foundation for optimising the performance, safety and sustainability of your battery systems. ION Cell combines strength, conductivity and high sustainability standards with excellent formability, electrolyte resistance, laser weldability and high-quality surface finish. In addition to the proven standard material 3003 H14, with which we are the market leader, an optimised variant of the 3000 series is available, which meets particularly sustainable requirements thanks to its high recycled content and is in no way inferior to the properties of 3003 H14. In order to meet the different manufacturing processes of prismatic top and side terminal cell housings in terms of materials, we also offer our alloys with customised strength and elongation properties (tempering) on request or develop these together with you.
Our solutions for prismatic cell housings:
Speira is setting new standards for cylindrical battery cell housings with ION Cell. Compared to nickel-coated steel, battery housings made of Speira aluminium are characterised by significantly higher thermal conductivity and lower weight - while at the same time offering high formability, strength and laser weldability. These properties make a noticeable contribution to the longevity, fast-charging capability and high gravimetric energy density of the battery cells. The specially developed ION Cell 3-CS is also particularly sustainable with a maximum recycling rate.
Our solutions for cylindrical cell housings:
A cell cover consists of various aluminium components such as the baseplate, the terminals, the current collectors and a welded or embossed venting plate. Our ION Cell solutions are characterised by excellent mechanical strength, high weldability, electrolyte resistance and first-class surface quality. Typical alloys for the lid components include 1050, 1060, 1070 and 3003.
Our solutions for your battery cell covers:
At Speira, we have long recognised that aluminium is the ideal material for the seamless production of cell housings. This is why we began specialising in the production of the primary material at an early stage and developing special alloys outside the market standard.
You and our customers benefit from this mature expertise, and we work together with them in development partnerships to find solutions that meet their individual requirements.
See for yourself – we are also happy to supply sample material and test quantities on request.
